Travelwide 4x5 camera

I was so excited to see this new project started by some friends of friends, a portable 4x5 camera- yes! It's called a Travelwide and is currently on Kickstarter. The project has been funded but I encourage you to go check it out and secure a camera for yourself. There's really no comparison when it comes to the quality and beauty of large format photography. Ben Syverson anJustin Lundquist have created a lightweight, portable 4x5 camera that is easy to travel with. I am so excited to try this out! I also love being able to support my peers in their creative endeavors. Here's a little video about it.

Taking advantage of the Winter darkness

I'm teaching an extra course at Marwen this term which starts today! I wanted to teach a photography course that wouldn't depend on daylight to shoot since it gets dark so early these days. The course is for middle school students so I thought it would be fun to play around with some light graffiti. I've been hording all sort of flashlights, LED lights, camping lamps and anything else that my students can use to make their photos. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with! Here are some examples I found to get them inspired.

Quote on process

Everyone approaches their artistic practice differently, this quote resonated with me.

"I see things all the time that trigger research or give me a visual idea to consider and construct. For me, the camera is not for capturing a moment — it’s the final step atop a layered, calculated process."

Coming and Going

This is a series I did when I lived in Boston for grad school at MassArt.
Shortly after I moved there, I got mugged on my doorstep. Going home and leaving my house suddenly became pretty stressful. I made this series as a way to document the seemingly simple act of coming and going. The sequence got all jumbled as I was adding the images to this post so to see the proper order, go to my flickr page.

Comer e Beber

As I try to escape the frigid Chicago air (but Spring is on the way!), here are some more images from my trips to Portugal. Food and drinks always trigger memories for me and I make it a point to enjoy some specific items whenever I go back to Portugal. Included above are: pasteis de nata (enjoyed in Belem of course), hot dog (Boca do Inferno, listening to AC/DC), grilled chicken, bread and cheese (Belem), pasteis de bacalhau (Cascais), grilled cheese and sumol (Ave Liberdade, Lisbon), SuperBock (Cascais waterfront).
